Hello Goowy!

goowy | your personal webtop

I admit it, I love the idea of having one place that I can access from anywhere and have it be the same. I’m an old IBM Company Man who loves his Mainframe. Sure, i value personal, private storage, but I also value convenience… and it is damn convenient for me to be able to have a desktop that is fast, responsive, flexible, and available from any connected computer (dare i say… “terminal”).

Enter Goowy :)

Goowy is a Web Desktop; one of many that have been making their mark on the techno-frontier lately. It’s the one that I have chosen to use because of two reasons:

1) I read a post over at franticindustries the other day that reviewed 10 of the bigger names in web desktops (or WebOS). After talking a little about each of the 10, the conclusion read:

I’d say that YouOS, Goowy and DesktopTwo are the names you should watch now and in the near future, while the others *might* turn into promising products, but we’ll have to wait a month or two for that to happen.

2) Goowy uses box.net as its method of file storage/transfer… and I already have a box.net account :) how perfect is that?

I played around with some of the others (thankfully most of them will let you use a guest account to see how the interface works), and I liked the look and feel of Goowy the best so far, so i’m happy with my knee-jerk reaction ;)

With Goowy you can keep your email, calendar, and address book all in ONE location that is accessible everywhere, with a far more intuitive and usable interface than any webmail system i’ve used. This is going to make my life far more simple in the days ahead. A limitation worth mentioning is that you can only have up to three (3) external email address accessed through Goowy. I’m not sure if this is just a limitation of the Goowy service being free (thus implying that if you subscribe to the service [not currently an option] this limitation would be lifted) or if it is an intrinsic limitation of the application’s code. I’m hoping for the former.

Goowy even has its own embedded IM client. It works with Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and ICQ accounts. No more IM list maintenance issues between computers! :)

All in all, i really love the idea of a virtual desktop. I’m going to continue to play around with Goowy, and i’ll keep y’all (or, y’ins) updated.

As a side note: Purefect has the great advantage of being able to use external applications; becuase of this i will be keeping it bookmarked so i can come back to it from time to time to check on its development status. At the moment there are far too many bugs for it to be useful, even to just the casual user.
